SUPER DOMINO

Super Domino is an excellent game to internalize new grammar. The players connect cards of the same color (sometimes 4, 5 cards in a row) and apply the Target Language (TL) to each card.

DECIDING THE TARGET LANGUAGE

1. The teacher decides:  For example: I (don't) like to _____.

2. The students decide the TL for each card themselves. (advanced)

3. Use the Color Coded Cards (explain the TL for each color if needed)

SET UP

1. Select the topic cards you want to use. (make sure to select each topic card in all 5 colors)

2. Give all players 7 cards and place the remaining cards face down in the center, this is the Draw Pile.

3. Take the top card from the Draw Pile and place it, face up, on the table. This is the Start Card.

Let’s say that the Start Card is a green "read a book" card.

HOW TO PLAY

1. If player 1 has any green cards, (s)he can place these one by one on the left OR right side of the Start Card, using the TL for each card.

2. If player 1 doesn’t have any green cards, but has a "read a book" card in an other color (lets say orange) (s)he can use this card to change color and place it on either side of the Start Card.

If player 1 has any other orange topic cards, (s)he can connect those too, using the TL.

3. If player 1 doesn’t have any green cards or another "read a book" card, (s)he must take a card from the Draw Pile. If it is a green card (s)he can place it.

If it is another "read a book" card, for example pink, (s)he can place it and connect any other pink cards (s)he has, using the TL.

4. When player 1 is done (s)he says I'm finished! and it becomes the next player’s turn. But  if a player can’t place a card after taking a card from the Draw Pile, (s)he says Nothing! and it becomes the next player’s turn.

5. Now player 2 can add cards with the same border color or change color using a matching Topic Card in a different color.

The game finishes when a player has put down all of her/his all cards, or when it's time to finish....

✋ You're not allowed to play more than one color per turn.

You can't change color with your second or third card. If the first card you play is green, all other cards have to be green as well.

If you want to play another color, then you'll have to wait for the next turn...

You can change color using a matching Topic Card in a different color.  (e.g., connect a blue watching TV card to a pink watching TV card) but only at the start of a turn.
